So we went to Maxwell Food Centre or whatever the name is recently and tried out the food there. It’s quite a famous food centre, notorious for the various famous dishes there. So do try going there to try some of the dishes if your free.
Our chosen ‘victim’ for that night, to dissect the food stuff there, was none other than..

Marina South something something. We were attracted to it because there were like newspaper articles about their supposedly extremely delicious kway teow and oyster omelette. So we naturally expected it to be pretty damn good, better than the store we tried previously.
First dish.

Hokkien Mee
Bleh. Don’t even bother trying the Hokkien Mee, think its like S$4 and it wasn’t great at all. I mean the proportion of food they gave was quite value for money but the taste would torture your tastebuds more than please it. It was too dry for my liking. And though they gave 4 rather nicely sized prawns, it just didn’t make the dish any better.
Because they used yellow noodles and the white transparant ones (粗米粉), you have to catch the proportion really well so that the dryness of the yellow noodles wouldn’t overwhelm you. I personally hate yellow noodles, not only cause I think they taste horrible but also because they give you a migraine. This shop didn’t handle that really well, so when you bite the noodles, its like hard and dry?
And the importance of Hokkien Mee is also the chilli. The chilli for this one was yucky. Nothing to compliment it on at all. If your going to spend money on a plate of Hokkien Mee, I have 3 suggestions.
1) If your already at Maxwell, try the store at Maxwell, beside Zhen Zhen porridge. They don’t have a name, its just Hokkien Mee, Carrot Cake and something as their signboard. That one is definitely better than this store.
2) If your in the mood to shop in air conditioned places and want to be cool while eating, try the AMK hub’s food court. The Hokkien Mee there is the more traditional kind, with great chilli and great wet Hokkien Mee.
3) If your shopping in Northpoint, head to the coffeeshop near the bus interchange. Not the first one, the one further down a little way up from the POSB bank.

Hokkien Mee from Yishun
This is the one from Yishun and its not bad. It is very wet and they use fine strands of bee hoon in it as well the normal yellow mee and the white transparant one. Its wet, which is how I like my Hokkien mee and the chilli is quite ok.
The one that I really really liked, with the best chilli in the world, has moved from Yishun and I don’t know where it is anymore.
It was near the old Yishun library, in the coffee shop beside Macdonalds. Best hokkien mee. No more. HAHA

Carrot Cake from Maxwell
This one is also from the same store. It wasn’t a consolation at all from the Hokkien mee. Not nice. Not worth trying. I don’t even remember why it was a hundred different kinds of horrible. It was just dry? Weird? Cooked to a point where you can taste the burnt taste?
I just remembered pushing most of it to daddy and mommy to eat finish because it was hmm… Simply horrible?

Oyster Omelette
The newspaper ad that they placed in front of their store claims that the oysters were imported from Korea and that the chilli was hand made. So it made the dish out to be pretty dang good no?
First bite of it with the chilli and I was disappointed. The chilli wasn’t the really nice kind. I don’t know how you tell if a chilli is hand made but I do know how to tell if the chilli is good. And this chilli was not good.
It didn’t give you the shiok feeling as you ate it. It didn’t have enough of the limey taste I think and well, wasn’t nice.
The korean oysters were small and pretty much like oysters everywhere. I do suspect that they aren’t very fresh, cause they had that weird oystery un-fresh taste. But maybe, I just got a rotten plate of oyster omelette out of the billions they churn out.
Nothing to rave about, wouldn’t try it.

Kway Teow
So we bought back the Kway Teow from the exact same store for my brother. And when asked how was it, he said it was ok. But you know guys, you probe them more and they are like “YOU WANT TO TRY YOURSELF?”
Unfortunately I’m an anti-kwayteow person so I didn’t try that shops signature dish of kway teow.
My parents did say that the Kway Teow from Yishun however (same stall as the Hokkien mee from above) was worth trying.

Kway Teow from Yishun
I did not intentionally make the kway teow in the package look ugly and this one look better. It just turned out this way. HAHA. So try the kway teow if you trust my brothers conclusion of ‘ok’ or my parents with their ‘its quite good no?’
Being complete food junkies, we were unsatisfied with our meal so we went to the other section of the food centre and ate popiah and desert. HAHA.

Popiah from Maxwell

Popiah from Maxwell
This popiah shop is beside Ri Xin snack delight and likewise, it has no name, just popiah or something as their signboard. Its I think $2 for 2 so its quite cheap so we decided to try it out.
But it was disappointing! Not because it tasted horrible. Simply because there was NO TASTE. Apart from the little mini egg they squeezed in there and you can taste the egg yolk, theres no other taste. Oh and you can also taste the chilli that was very kiam (salty). So yuck.
Try the one at Funan instead! The one on the ground floor near Ya Kun. Wonder how many times I’ve promoted this. HAHA.
So we couldn’t end our day with horror food right? So we went for something safe. Something that can’t suck that badly.

Mango Ice Kachang
We bought it from the store a few stores down from the popiah store. The uncle there was quite nice. Anyway, the mango ice kachang was not bad. I mean ice kachang can’t really go wrong. It was nice and sweet, and you could actually bite the mango chunks so it was really not bad.
On a complete side note, I’ve been looking for Bo Bo Cha Cha where they have those ‘chewy chewy’ thats like big and chewy. They are like Nata De Coco but not like those, its the old traditional kind that you have to cook very long and they are like multicoloured. Like simply the best! But can’t find those now. If you know where, let me know yea? (:

Hum Jin Pang from Maxwell
This is like probably the most famous store there. Its this old uncle who makes Hum Jin Pang and throughout the years he has maintained his pricing at 50 cents or $1 or something.
You can buy the plain ones or the one with red bean paste inside and choose if you want to roll them in sugar. I like the ones that are with red bean paste and roll them in sugar!
They are a really cute snack. I mean, normal Hum Jin Pang are those really huge like the size of your face kind. And they aren’t rolled in sugar.
So you can bite these and they taste reallyyyyyy great. No kidding. Not lying. Really good. Non red bean paste lovers would also love this! MUST TRY MUST TRY!!!
I tried to take pictures of the uncle, but my phone, who has been cooperative most of the night, decides to just take blurry shots when I was trying to catch pictures of the uncle. If you don’t believe me, take a look.

Like omg, I then realised that the flour from the Hum Jin Pang got onto my camera lens. ._.
But by the time I realised, I was at home. Anyway, you can help the old man to fry the Hum Jin Pang which was fun! (If you know how to use chopsticks correctly).

Min Jiang Kueh (Peanut Pancake)
On a sidenote, we also bought the Min Jiang Kueh from Jollybean. I’m not sure if its called peanut pancake. It was nice as usual. Jollybean is quite good at their peanut pancakes, I don’t know about the red bean or others. Anyway, peanut pancake rocks!
Look at the filling oozing out, thats how much they put into it!
And that ends my Maxwell adventure! Want to know where I want to eat next?
Hint: Look at the pictures below!

SEAFOOD!!! This is from the restuarant newly opened at the newly renovated Jurong Point. i forgot the name. Anyway, doesn’t the seafood just scream at you to eat them? EAT ME EAT ME I’M SOOOO WILLING!!
or maybe their screaming DON’T EAT ME. ah well, we have to complete the cycle of life or it wouldn’t be fair huh?
So hopefully, I’ll get to eat those pretty darn good looking seafood soon! (:
